![]() Statement from the Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI) 26 November 2009 The Conference of Religious of Ireland wishes to acknowledge the litany of shameful abuse of young children by some priests - so vividly outlined in the Dublin Inquiry Report, published in late November. Sr. Marianne O’ Connor, Director General of CORI, said, “This report, coming so soon after the Ryan Report, raises very serious questions for all of us in religious life. How could all of this abuse have occurred and be perpetrated by people who were in positions of trust and who were supposedly living Christian lives? So many children have suffered and it is very clear that not enough was done to protect them or to deal with the abusers, when knowledge was to hand”. Sr. O’Connor went on to say, “Thankfully all Congregations and Dioceses have now signed up to The National Guidelines designed to protect children and we must ensure that never again in our future can such mistakes be made and such abuse of innocent persons occur”. In addition, she said, “This publication will again bring pain to so many people and I hope they will get the help they need. Faoiseamh, the independent helpline, is freely available and I would urge those who have been abused to make contact” Website: www.faoiseamh.com |
